Where to shop in Bangkok?

The amount of shopping malls in Bangkok is staggering! Here we listed the most popular and centrally located, but there are a lot more on the outskirts of Bangkok. Most travellers visiting Bangkok wonder why there are so many of them, but you have to be living in Thailand long enough to understand that a mall is not just a shopping place; it’s a full entertainment complex.

The mall culture is big in Thailand, and millennials often make-up and dress elegantly to go to the mall. Every weekend, locals travel to the mall to meet friends, enjoy all kinds of food, take a lot of selfies, watch a movie, eat some more and take more selfies. There are even supercar parking areas for your Lamborghini or Ferraris! If you live here, you’ll understand why downtown Bangkok gets busy on weekends; indeed, it can be really fun! So here are the ten best malls in Bangkok.

1. Siam Paragon

Siam Paragon Shopping Mall Bangkok

Siam Paragon is still considered the most luxurious mall in Bangkok. Like in all malls, the entire ground floor is dedicated to the most expensive brands, and it gets cheaper as you move to the upper floors. The layout is easy to navigate, and an estimated 4,500 shops and 495,000 square meters of shopping surface. Siam Paragon aims at the upmarket clientele but ends up being a tourist destination on its own, to the point that it was the most Instagrammed place in the world in 2013! Read more

It is now bright and well-designed, with many restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues, including a vast ice skating rink. It is a very popular mall, but the lack of Sky Train access made it less popular than Siam Paragon or Emquartier. Read more

It offers an incredible range of shops, restaurants and entertainment, but the size makes it hard to navigate. 5. MBK

MBK Center is an iconic budget shopping mall standing in the heart of Bangkok since 1985, best known for its bazaar product and tons of knockoff goods. The location at the top of the ‘shopping mile’ in the Siam district makes it very convenient to access, and with more than 2,000 shops and stalls, the size is enormous. While its neighbours Siam Discovery, Siam Center, Siam Paragon and CentralWorld target the upper market, MBK has always kept the budget-conscious clientele in mind and feels a bit like an indoor market, with Air Con! 6. Central Embassy

Central Embassy tried to cater to the local elite of Bangkok on the shopping mile. It started with only the most luxurious brands and invested much in hi-so events, especially since the exclusive Park Hyatt hotel is directly connected to the mall. It didn’t work too well initially, and they added a few mainstream brands and a great local food court with quality products from many well-established local restaurants. The result works pretty well, and Central Embassy is finally getting busy.

Just recently, Gaysorn changed its strategy and became more mainstream, and it is finally a place for everyone to visit.
