Central World Shopping Mall Bangkok

Central World is now the third-largest mall in Bangkok after Siam Paragon and the new Icon Siam. It is truly a shopper’s and dining paradise with a strategic location, probably with a broader price range than the two other shopping malls in Bangkok. Central World aims at the mid and upper range of local and international clientele. With an immense esplanade in front of the mall and a strategic location in Siam, the heart of Bangkok, CentralWold is often the stage of special events, concerts, and seasonal night markets. The vast space in front of the mall is one of the right places to wait for the New Year’s firework if you don’t mind the crowd. On the downside, CentralWorld has no direct Skytrain access and, unless you drive your car, a bit of walk from Chidlom or Siam BTS station is necessary.

CentralWorld Shopping Mall Bangkok

Central World has a long history. It was initially built in 1990 and was first called ‘World Trade Centre’ and was the place everyone would go to for fun and shopping, even on a short trip to Bangkok. It was a rather dark maze of shops, and in a way, it was fun. You could never find your way around! in 2003, they renovated and renamed the mall to CentralWorld. The success was instant, mostly because Bangkokians love shopping malls on the weekend, and novelty is a real magnet!

Shopping at Central World

The amount of shops available at CentralWorld is staggering. We list a few to give you an idea, but with 550,000 m2 (5,900,000 sq ft) of surface, the list is endless. All the mainstream brands you can expect to find in a mall are here and easy to find, which wasn’t the case in the past. The first floor is, as usual, dedicated to luxury brands, while the highest floor displays an impressive collection of restaurants and a vast cinema.

Apple Store Central World

Apple Store Central World

Apple Store Central World is the latest addition to the mall. This immense fancy circular shop is built on two floors and resembles a massive wooden umbrella with floor-to-ceiling glass walls. As this is an apple store, you already know what you can expect to find inside as products and services.

Food and Restaurants

Online shopping has affected the balance between shopping and dining in most malls in Bangkok. In the past, people came to shop then wrap the day with dinner, but now the trend is inverted. People come to eat and eventually will buy something after their meal.

More and more shops disappeared to be replaced by all kinds of dining venues. All the usual international franchises are here, obviously, always popular with teenagers and tourists who don’t feel like taking a chance with Thai food. What is interesting is that there are a lot of branches of local restaurants as well. Local franchises are a welcome addition to otherwise blend Mc Donalds or Sizzler.

Groove is a relatively recent addition to the mall entirely dedicated to dining and drinking, usually with more local names than in the main galley. Groove is where young Bangkokians go for dinner and a bit of casual party with friends. The place is compact with a surprising collection of restaurants on multiple floors, plus live music in the central area. It’s a great place to end the day after shopping as you can walk around and see which cuisine talks to your appetite: Thai, Italian, Japanese, steakhouse etc. Groove is open from 10 am to midnight every day.

List of restaurants at Groove:

  • 1881 by Water Library (gastro bar)
  • Air Space (Thai and Western cuisine)
  • Apinara (Thai cuisine)
  • Greyhound Cafe (modern casual cuisine)
  • Hiyaku (Japanese)
  • Hobs (house of beers and modern cuisine)
  • Hyde and Seek (modern western cuisine)
  • House of Eden (fusion food, cakes and cocktails)
  • iO Italian Osteria (Italian)
  • Kenshin Izakaya (Japanese)
  • Kin Hey (Thai)
  • Paul (western casual)
  • The Ranch (steakhouse)
  • Wine Connection (steakhouse, grill and western food)
  • Wine I Love You (western food)
