A great rooftop bar on Sukhumvit
The Octave Rooftop Lounge and Bar is one of the most impressive in Bangkok by size. Built on three floors at the top of the Bangkok Marriott Hotel on Sukhumvit 57, Octave offers a full 360 view of the capital with a great perspective on the entire BTS track and the usual traffic jams so famous in Sukhumvit road. Fortunately, it is also very easy to reach by BTS.
The highest floor of Octave rooftop has a cool circular bar and a DJ booth playing great music. The place is almost as large as the entire building, with just glass panels all around to prevent you from falling. The effect is very impressive, a fun way to end the day with friends. Octave is also the perfect spot to take your visiting friends and impress them with the vista and a couple of drinks before dinner or party (they do have a Happy Hour on selected beverages). When the sun sets, the view from the 49th floor is jaw-dropping, and everyone frantically moves around trying to get the best sunset shots to brag on Facebook.
The two floors below floors have their bars and very inviting sofas. They too offer great photo opportunities, but nothing beats the top floor and this impression of gliding above Bangkok! Just keep in mind aware that the top floor is occasionally pre-booked for special events, so call in advance at 02 797 0400 to check if the floor is open. There is also a minimum dress code for Octave rooftop: no short pants and no sandals.
What to Order
The bar serves modern Asian tapas, great cocktails starting at 360 baht, mocktails (non-alcoholic cocktail) 260 baht, and, to give you an idea, local beers at 225 baht. Take advantage of the happy hour from 5 to 7 pm, buy one cocktail from their signature collection, and get one free. They are mostly prepared with local ingredients and tropical fruits and juices and carry fun names like ‘Phuket’, ‘Chiang Mai’, ‘Lamai’ and ‘Lumpini’. They taste light in alcohol but don’t get fooled; they are properly loaded, as you will notice after the second glass. They also have a great choice of liquor, including some single malt whisky, including a Glenfiddich 30 years! (but we won’t tell the price here, you’ll have to get and see it for yourself) Remember that all prices are subject to tax and service charges, so the total is always more than what it seems when ordering. If you are on a budget but desperately want to take that Bangkok from the top photo, the cheapest drinks are the soft drinks (160 baht) or a bottle of Evian at 95 baht; but what would the fun be?
